Map Handicap Calculator
Calculate fair odds for a map handicap (e.g. -1.5/+1.5 maps) in a BO3 or BO5 series from your estimated per-map win probability.
Your own estimate of the favourite's chance to win a single map — not the whole series.
Enter the favourite's per-map win probability to see the fair odds on the handicap line.
This calculation assumes each map is independent with the same win probability for the favourite throughout the series. Real matches can involve momentum, map-pool preferences, and side selection that shift the actual probability map to map.
Map handicap is one of the most common esports betting markets — instead of just betting on who wins the series, you bet on the margin, such as the favourite winning by at least 2 maps (-1.5) or the underdog staying within 1 map (+1.5). This calculator prices any handicap line from your own estimate of each team's per-map win probability.
How the handicap odds are calculated
Each map is assumed to be an independent outcome with the same win probability p for the favourite. In a best-of-3 (BO3) series, a team wins either 2-0 or 2-1, and in a best-of-5 (BO5) series, 3-0, 3-1 or 3-2. The probability of each exact final score is computed with the binomial "race to N wins" formula.
P(win with exactly k losses) = C(winsNeeded − 1 + k, k) × p^winsNeeded × (1-p)^k
A half-map handicap line (e.g. -1.5 or +1.5) can never push, because the final score is always a whole number. The favourite's -1.5 only covers if the team wins by at least 2 maps, while the underdog's +1.5 covers if the team either wins the series outright or loses by just 1 map. The two sides' cover probabilities therefore always add up to exactly 100%.
Worked example
Say you estimate the favourite's per-map win probability at 60% in a BO3 series, looking at the ±1.5-map line. The probability the favourite sweeps 2-0 (and so covers -1.5) is 0.6² = 36%, giving fair odds of 1/0.36 ≈ 2.78. The underdog's +1.5 covers in every other case (a 64% chance), giving fair odds of 1/0.64 ≈ 1.56.
Frequently asked questions
What does map handicap mean in esports betting?
Map handicap is a betting market where a notional number of maps is added to or subtracted from a team's result before deciding who "wins" the bet. A favourite at -1.5 maps must win by at least 2 maps for the bet to land, while an underdog at +1.5 maps wins the bet as long as their team doesn't lose by 2 or more maps.
Why are handicap lines always on a half-map (x.5)?
A half-map makes a push (refund) mathematically impossible, since the final map score is always a whole number and can never land exactly on a half-map. It's the same principle behind Asian handicaps and totals in other sports.
How do I know what per-map win probability to enter?
The calculator relies on your own assessment — based on things like recent form, head-to-head results, the map pool, and any roster changes. The better your estimate of the per-map win probability, the more reliable the fair odds the tool produces.
