Tournament poker is the one format where a small fixed entry can return several hundred times itself, and that arithmetic only exists because thousands of entries are pooled into a single prize. Which means the room you pick is largely irrelevant — what you are actually selecting is the network sitting behind it, and how many people it can put in a field at the hour you sit down.
Licensing decides how wide that pool can be. Some jurisdictions require operators to ring-fence players inside national borders; others permit shared international liquidity, and a handful now pool several countries together by treaty. The practical consequence is visible in the lobby: segregated pools run smaller fields, shallower prize structures and guarantees that are quietly reduced when turnout disappoints.
The formats, and what each one costs you in time
- MTT – Scheduled start, large field, long runtime. The highest ceiling and the longest sessions; budget several hours before you register.
- Sit & Go – Starts when the seats fill, typically six to nine players. Predictable length, flatter payouts, easy to fit into an evening.
- Bounty / progressive knockout – Part of every buy-in is a price on each player's head. Rewards confrontation and rewrites the correct strategy from the first hand.
- Freerolls – No entry cost, real prize money, very large fields. The cheapest way to learn a structure and the worst place to measure your edge.
What to check in the lobby before you register
Read the schedule in your own time zone first — a network whose flagship events all start in the middle of your night is worth less to you than its guarantee suggests. Then look at whether recent guaranteed events actually met their targets. Persistent overlay is a room paying you to show up; consistently overfilled fields mean the guarantee was decoration.
Finally, check the buy-in currency and the withdrawal route available where you play. Winning a tournament is worth less if the payout sits behind a conversion spread and a week of processing. The rooms above are compared on all four points.

An MTT starts at a scheduled time, runs across many tables and pays a small top slice of a large field. A Sit & Go has no clock at all — it begins the moment its seats fill, which makes the time commitment predictable. A freeroll costs nothing to enter and still pays real money, so the fields are enormous and the equity per entrant is tiny. Most rooms run all three continuously.
A guarantee is a promise that the prize pool reaches a stated figure regardless of turnout. When too few players register, the room pays the shortfall out of its own money — that shortfall is overlay, and it is free equity distributed among everyone who entered. Rooms that guarantee more than their traffic supports produce it repeatedly, which is one of the few genuinely positive edges available to a recreational entrant.
The network. Individual rooms are storefronts onto shared player pools, so two differently branded sites can seat you in the same tournament. What matters is which pool a room feeds into and whether its licensing lets that pool cross borders — segregated national pools run smaller fields and thinner guarantees than international shared liquidity.
Low enough that a full session costs less than an evening out — for most people that means the €1 to €5 band, or freerolls while you learn the structures. Tournament variance is severe: a competent player can run a hundred entries without a final table. Treat the buy-in as the entire amount at risk and never re-enter to chase a bust.
